Bethel Afework is a U of C student in her last year, and a spoken word artist/pianist, who was born in Toronto, but has lived in Calgary since she was 5 years old. She was enrolled in piano classes at age 4, where she discovered how much she enjoyed music and performing. She started writing/performing spoken word in high school, and helped establish the first slam poetry club at Father Lacombe high school. Her current spoken word endeavour is in her duo, BASK, with guitarist/instrumentalist Siddharth Kataria. They blend genres of folk, rock and acoustic with poetry. She is also the founder of Raw Voices YYC a monthly spoken word, comedy, and music show which consists of open mic and headliners.
